Excellent, detailed illustrations with a lengthy story concerning another of my favorite animals, Galapagos tortoises! Text in English and Spanish is presented side-by-side making for easy comparison (but like it better on my computer than my kindle given the larger size and color). {my thoughts} – Olinguito is a really lovable animal that likes to hide and stay out of sight due to his shyness. He does however, come out of hiding and talk to Tomas a tortoise that likes to tell stories to all his forest friends. Tomas however, ins’t very liked for his story telling at first but once Olinguito gets him telling some stories all the other animals start to listen and like him. Tomas is an old tortoise and has many stories to tell for all his years he has been alive. However, he won’t be around much longer so it is good to listen and learn from him. It made me sad to read about him forgetting about what he was saying and not remembering his place in his stories. All too often that happens with the older generations.
This is a good book for any child to read and it has it’s perks. Its got beautiful illustrations. The words and the illustrations go together well. It is also written in both English and Spanish and therefore can appeal to more people. It is brilliantly written and well worth the read.
I found this tale extremely engaging. Perhaps because I have been to Ecuador and to the Galápagos Islands, and I have a real soft spot for anything about them. They are truly a remarkable place.
I love the way the story has a conservationist angle to it. Children will love the environmental message, or at least learn and grow from it.
I also love that it is bilingual and is a good way to learn a second language.
The pictures are excellent.
The Olonquito is actually a real animal. It is a mammal that was only discovered recently (2013?) in South America. I like that the author used such a creature to hear the story from the wonderful Galapagos tortoise.

Thomas is mocked by the other animals in Cloud Forest and told he talks to much, because he likes to tell stories of what he has seen and experienced through his life. Those who have heard his stories so not believe him. That is all but Olingiuto who likes to hear the stories, but is afraid that like all the others who have listened to Thomas before he too will disappear. Yet when the others tell Thomas to be quiet, Olinguito finally speaks up and comes out into the open to tell Thomas he believes him and enjoys his stories and wants to hear more. As Thomas talks to Olinguito and tells him his stories the animals become intrigued even tho they still hackle him. Read along to see how one voice can encourage another and make a difference in the world around them.
Told in both English and Spanish, "Olinguito Speaks Up is perfect for the anyone learning Spanish or English as a second language. This story teaches us to take time to learn about someone instead of making instant judgements. It also shows us that even one small voice in the crowd can make a difference. Written for the young it has an appeal and lesson to teach everyone of all ages. We learn to respect one another and all the many forms of life on our planet. Open up your copy today and read this fascinating folk tale and perhaps practice your foreign language skills as well.
The pictures are what sold me on this story! I also like the bilingual English-Spanish element (though the designer in me found the different fonts distracting, although I suppose it added clarity that "yes, these are intentionally two different languages" - good for kids in particular).
"Olinguito Speaks Up" is a good way to introduce kids to foreign languages, environmental conservation, animals, the Galapagos, and more. Recommended for younger children and those learning either English or Spanish; it's an easy, practical, and more interesting way to practice one's language skills than by reading a dry textbook - or by jumping immediately to Cervantes' Don Quixote, for example.
I received a free copy of the book via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
I liked how the bilingual words were in separate paragraphs. It made reading on an electronic device more enjoyable. The way facts were woven in was nice too. Sometimes the flow seemed choppy.
my grandchildren loved it, even though it was bi-lingual
Seems like the story is going good places, then it ends and it seems unfinished. The kids and I still enjoyed it. They liked the pictures in the end.
Excellent, detailed illustrations with a lengthy story concerning another of my favorite animals, Galapagos tortoises! Text in English and Spanish is presented side-by-side making for easy comparison (but like it better on my computer than my kindle given the larger size and color). Very good book!
