To Have and to Hold Wedding Belles Book 1 eBook Lauren Layne
It's always a pleasure to pick up a book by Ms. Layne and this being a wedding-themed romance, I was doubly excited to get my hands on it, but for the first time since I started reading her books, I struggled to finish one. It had everything to do with the characters and it may simply be because I was expecting something different. If you find out a few minutes before your wedding that your groom is a con man wanted by the law, putting a huge expanse of land between you and the ensuring fiasco is the best course of action, as Brooke Baldwin discovered. While her reputation and her wedding plan business was destroyed in the wake of the scandal, Brooke is determined to start over, much wiser and certainly much less trusting of men and their motives. Her new job with The Wedding Belles is the perfect place for her to do so and a multi-million dollar wedding is the way to go. If it didn't come with a micromanaging control freak in the form of the brother of the bride holding the purse strings.
Seth Tyler doesn't trust that his sister's unexpected engagement isn't a ploy by her fiancé to get into her trust fund but he needs help to prove it and if that means getting involved in the minutiae of wedding planning, then so be it. Too bad that the wedding planner is not open to his plan at all.
Seth and Brooke are as opposite as can be. Seth is straightforward and controlling. His close management style is definitely not a fluke and while it comes from a good place, it's not necessarily seen that way, but there is no doubt that he loves his sister. Brooke on the other hand is sweet and friendly, in fact the stereotype of a California surfer girl with a bubbly and fun personality, which suits her job. And the sparks between them are enough to light up the night. So what can go wrong?
With the way this book started, there was so much to look forward to and when it picked up, was really enjoyable. It was sweet and fun, passionate and entertaining, as you would expect from Ms. Layne. One positive for me was that Seth was unexpected because he was quite different from her usual heroes. He was more buttoned up and less of a ladies' man. Another positive was Brooke. She was strong and very self-aware, she knew what she wanted and went after it. However, Brooke and Seth just never seemed to mesh for me until the end especially because of their rough start.
I'll say this: the second half of this book was everything I was looking forward to and I have high hopes for the next book.

To Have and to Hold Wedding Belles Book 1 eBook Lauren Layne Reviews
To Have and to Hold is the first book in Lauren Layne’s new series The Wedding Belles, about a wedding planning company in New York City. If you enjoyed her Oxford or Redemption series, chances are you will like this one too. It is not as good as her New Adult book, Good Girl.
After wedding planner Brooke Baldwin’s fiance is arrested right before their wedding, she decides to start fresh in New York City. Brooke joins The Wedding Belles as their newest partner and is determined to succeed in her new city. Her first clients are the very sweet, Maya Tyler, a hotel heiress and her fiance, Neil.
Seth Tyler, Maya’s brother, is suspicious of her lightning-fast engagement and her new fiance’s dubious work habits. In order to investigate the situation further, he inserts himself firmly into the wedding planning process. Seth meets Brooke and our romance begins.
To Have and to Hold is a classic contemporary romance. No evil heroes here, just an over-involved big brother who thinks he can control everything around him. Brooke is your typical heroine; blonde, kind, and successful at her career. While there aren’t any surprises, it is a sweet book. It was perfect for me on a day when I couldn’t take one more damaged MMA fighter or cheating MC alpha. Sometimes you just want a book about two normal (but rich and beautiful) people, weddings, and romance, To Have and to Hold is exactly that.
I don’t always comment on covers because so many romance covers are so terrible and it doesn’t always mean the book is. But, I love this beautiful picture of a bride, the colors are fabulous and it portrays the light romance of the book perfectly.
The main conflict between Seth and Brooke is Seth’s efforts to control everything. Maybe I’ve been reading too many New Adult books about crazy heroes, but I understood Seth’s decisions perfectly. I was actually surprised that a prenuptial agreement isn’t brought into the storyline at all. Given Maya Tyler’s extreme wealth I would think that background checks and a prenup would be expected. I would have had zero issues with the way Seth tried to check out Neil and care for Brooke. So the conflict felt a little like manufactured drama to me.
I didn’t really buy the ending. Without spoilers I can say that Seth waits an unrealistically long amount of time to fix things with Brooke. It doesn’t make sense. Of course it’s all very romantic when the two finally do get together and the ending itself is sweet and romantic.
To Have and to Hold is a great beach book. It is not going to change your life and you may not remember the plot in a few weeks, but it is light and romantic and makes for a nice escape.
